Bozeman is the hub of the Gallatin Valley region in South Central Montana, which includes Gallatin, Park and
Madison Counties. The Bozeman area is an outdoor paradise with abundant activities including fly-fishing in the
Gallatin, Madison and Yellowstone Rivers, exceptional hunting, first rate hiking, camping, skiing at Big Sky and
Bridger Bowl, and snowmobiling in West Yellowstone.
The area was first home to many Tribal bands, including the Shoshone, Nez Perce, Blackfeet, Flathead and Sioux.
The abundant wildlife in the waters and wilderness that kept them here is what initially brought the trappers,
hunters and Lewis and Clark party in the early 1800's. Gold was discovered in the Bozeman vicinity, and in 1867
John Bozeman founded his namesake. The city has grown slowly but steadily since then, and has become the home for
Montana State University, many cultural and recreational venues, and over 40 properties listed on the National Registry
of Historical Places.
Bozeman is the County seat for Gallatin County, and the cultural and economic center for the Gallatin Valley area.
In April 1989, Outside Magazine named Bozeman one of the top 15 greatest sporting towns in America. Bozeman has been
growing steadily and hit a city population of about 28,500 in 1996 and a county wide population of 60,000 in that year.
