Circled by Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park, Kalispell lies in the heart
of the Northern Rocky Mountain wild lands. When combined with the Bob Marshall, Great Bear
and other designated wilderness areas, the region becomes a recreational wonderland of almost 10,000 square miles!
In 1809, an explorer named David Thompson led a party along the Pend O'Reille River into a paradise of natural beauty. Kalispell, which means "Prairie above the Lake" was named by the Blackfoot and Blood Indians who inhabited the area before white travelers arrived. Early settlers arriving here in the late 1870 and 80's with the railroad following in January 1, 1892. As we head into the 21st Century, Kalispell continues to flourish attracting families, retirees, hunters, entrepreneurs and businesses.
Kalispell is the county seat of Flathead County and the trade center of Northwest Montana. Named by Mountain
Sports and Living magazine as the "Best Mountain Town in America", Flathead was the second fastest growing county
during the first half of the decade (up 20.2 percent). The city of Kalispell has a population of 16,255, with greater
Kalispell reaching 32,931.
A tourism, recreation and retirement mecca, the Kalispell area plays host to eight golf courses within a 45 minute
drive, two ski resorts, 200 miles of groomed snowmobiling trails, indoor and outdoor tennis, swimming and health
facilities, as well as world class hunting, fishing and camping.
