Surrounded by the Bitterroot and Lolo National Forests, and blessed with the Blackfoot, Bitterroot, and

Originally the ancestral home to the peaceful Flathead Indians, Missoula has been a major stopping point for
travelers and traders since Lewis and Clark passed through here in 1805. The Hudson's Bay Trading Company and
the Nez Perce Indians also made homes here in 1824 and 1877 respectively. The discovery of gold changed the face
of Missoula forever. Prospectors helped develop Missoula into the cultural and trade center that we know today.
Logging, forest products and tourism are the major industries that propel Missoula into the next century.
Missoula with a population of 51,204 in 1997 is the county seat of Missoula County (population 88,818).
Considered the cultural center of Western Montana, Missoula boasts museums and galleries, The University
of Montana, the internationally renowned Missoula Children's Theater, restaurants, theaters, and cinemas,
along with the annual International Wildlife Film Festival. The Farmer's Market, People's Market and Out To
